EPISODE 63: Featuring Cheryl Dawson, Siberian Husky Fur/"Siberwool" Spinner

Hosted by Dorothy "FiveSibesMom" Wills-Raftery

Executive Producer: Robert Forto

Guest: Cheryl Dawson, Lead Siberwool Spinner for Save Our Siberians Siberspace Rescue Fund (SOS-SRF)

Aired April 22, 2018

Did you ever hear of a Husky fur hat? Mittens? Scarf? How about “siberwool?” Well, on today’s “The Sibe Vibe” show we will be hearing how to make these Husky creations with our guest Cheryl Dawson, lead siberwool spinner for the Save Our Siberians Siberspace Rescue Fund (SOS-SRF), volunteer board member, recording secretary, and Siberian Husky mom

2018 celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the SOS-SRF! Formed in 1998 from a little group of Internet folks, former Sibernet members, this organization has grown over the past 20 years to grant rescues “well over$250,000 to help Huskies in need AND has helped their 600th dog!” Amazing! And,according to the SOS-SRF, “It all started with an idea to spin Siberian fur in to yarn—siberwool—and auction off the resulting products.”

On today’s show, we will also hear all about how Cheryl first became interested in spinning, how she gathers Siberian Husky fur and turns it into Siberwool, the warm and cozy items she makes with it, and how this fur-based yarn helps Huskies in need. In addition to being a spinning and knitting extraordinaire, Cheryl continues in her role as the recording secretary of SOS-SRF and proudly says the organization, since it has grown, can now make grants of much more meaningful amounts. “We are also pleased to see rescue groups much more able to handle smaller amounts themselves, as they too learn more about fund-raising techniques.” Cheryl says their focus is now being more able to help out struggling younger groups as they begin to get organized to stand on their own. “Many times small grants to such groups can enable them to handle an expense that could have broken their bank accounts without us being there at a critical time….”
